Who is Canadian Natural? Canadian Natural Resources Limited (Canadian Natural) is one of the largest independent crude oil and natural gas producers in the world. Canadian Natural is a publicly traded company on the TSX and NYSE as CNQ.
What are your current operations?

Canadian Natural has a diverse and well balanced portfolio with operations in Western Canada, the North Sea, and Offshore Africa.

We are the largest producer of heavy oil in North America and the second largest producer of natural gas in Western Canada. We have a large reserve base with significant value to unlock in conventional and unconventional gas, light oil, primary heavy oil, Pelican Lake heavy oil, thermal in situ and oil sands mining.

Thermal in situ and oil sands mining are a key part of our strategy to transition to a longer-life, more sustainable asset base. We target to grow our thermal in situ production to 500,000 bbl/d by delivering projects that will add 40,000 to 60,000 bbl/d of production every two to three years. At Horizon, our world class oil sands mining operation, we are expanding to 250,000 bbl/d of production capacity and ultimately plan to expand to 500,000 bbl/d.

We have a deep inventory of high quality assets, a great team of people and a well defined plan to create value growth in the near, mid and long term.

Working at Canadian Natural

What is Canadian Natural's recruitment process? Applying to a specific posting online is the fastest and best way to get your resume and qualifications reviewed by a Recruiter. We review all resumes and shortlist the candidates thus determining who will be asked to attend an interview. Canadian Natural typically has two interviews before a final candidate is selected. Thereafter, an approval to hire process is initiated and the candidate is then extended an offer of employment.
What happens after I apply for a position? After you have submitted an online application for a position, you will receive an e-mail that confirms receipt of your application. All applications are then reviewed by a Recruiter to determine candidate suitability. If you have been selected for an interview, you will typically receive contact within 2 - 3 weeks. Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted. Those not selected will receive an e-mail to notify them of their status. Time frames may vary depending on several factors such as nature of the position and volume of applications.
How will I know when the position is filled? Vacancies remain on the careers page until a suitable candidate is hired. Typically, applicants who have applied online are notified via e-mail when the position has been closed.
I received a rejection letter for a position I had applied for. What can I do to be considered for employment in the future? Is travel required? Depending on the position, you may be presented with the opportunity to work at various site locations or even overseas. If extensive travel is required for a role, this will be stated in the job posting and will certainly be discussed in the interview process.

Do I need a degree to work at Canadian Natural? The necessity of a degree will depend on the role for which you are interested. If a degree is necessary, it will usually be stated in the Qualifications section of the job posting. However, Canadian Natural takes into consideration a combination of a candidate’s professional and educational background. If a candidate possesses the relevant experience and skills but does not hold a degree, they may still be considered for the role.
Do I need prior experience in the oil and gas industry to work at Canadian Natural? The experience required will depend on the role for which you are applying. Many technical roles require you to have spent time in a similar job and environment, while others require less specific experience. We have many business areas where skills from other industries are transferable and thus do not require prior experience in the oil and gas industry. The Qualifications section in each job posting will provide a good guideline of the desired skills and experience. Generally, if oil and gas experience is not considered absolutely essential to the primary functions of a role, candidates who do not possess this experience will still be considered.
Does Canadian Natural conduct interviews at job fairs? Canadian Natural views job fairs as an opportunity to connect with potential candidates interested in the company and inform them on current vacancies and the hiring process. Our goal is to speak with all candidates who visit our booth and answer their questions. Since we experience a high volume of traffic at job fairs, we are unable to conduct on-the-spot interviews.

Does Canadian Natural hire international candidates? Canadian Natural encourages all candidates, local or international, to apply for suitable positions that match their skill set and work experience. All candidates with suitable experience for a position will be given consideration regardless of their place of residence, however, preference will be given to those candidates with permission to live and work in Canada. If an international candidate is selected, Canadian Natural provides company sponsored relocation to assist the candidate and their family with the relocation process.

I am a first time user interested in a job at Canadian Natural. What should I do? To submit an application to a specific position:

1) Click on the 'Apply for this Position' button (found at the bottom of the page) for the position/posting you wish to apply for.




You will then be re-directed to the Application page where you will have to complete an application form by uploading your resume, LinkedIn Profile or Universal profile.

Please note: Uploading any of these options will allow you to save a significant amount of time and is the best way to complete an application.

This option auto-completes many fields in the application form. Please note that any fields marked with an asterisk are required to successfully complete the application process.



2) Once you ensure that all fields marked with an asterisk (*) are completed, click on the 'Submit' button to complete your job application.

Remember to record your password. Using this password along with your e-mail address, you are now able to login to the 'Previous Applicants' section of our careers site anytime to apply to other opportunities and update your contact information or resume.

It is possible for you to fill out a general application form. To do so, go to the bottom of the 'Your Account/Sign In' page:

I am a returning user interested in a job at Canadian Natural. What should I do? To submit an application to a specific position:

1) If you have already registered for an account and are a returning user, go to the bottom of the posting to the 'Are you a returning applicant?' section. Supply your username and password, then click the 'Add to my Jobs' button.



2) You will then be re-directed to the Application page where you will complete all the required fields marked with a red asterisk. Once you have completed the application, go to the bottom of the page and click the 'Submit' button.
Can I send a resume via fax or email? If you wish to apply for a position, please do so through our online application system. Applying or registering online through our online application system is the fastest and best way to get your resume reviewed by a Recruiter. The online system also allows us to communicate with you throughout the application process.
Can I apply for multiple positions? Yes, you can apply for multiple jobs. We encourage you to apply for any positions that are suited to your professional experience and skills.
How do I edit my profile and resume? Returning users are able to edit their profile or resume by logging into their user account. Once logged in, click on the 'Update my Information' tab to update personal information, add a resume or attachment, or change your password. Make sure to click on the 'Submit' button at the bottom of the page to save any changes made.

What are the acceptable formats for resume submission within your system? The following formats are accepted when a candidate is uploading their resume: DOC, DOCX, RTF, PDF, and TXT.
I am having problems uploading my resume. What should I do? If you are experiencing technical difficulties such as not being able to upload your resume, it may be due to your internet browser settings. Try the following helpful hints to resolve the problem:

Change Compatibility View

If you are using Internet Explorer, follow these steps:
 
  1. In the menu bar, click on 'Tools'
  2. Select 'Compatibility View'
This will correct compatibility problems between the browser and website and may help solve the problem of not being able to upload your resume. 

Clearing Your Cookies

Do you hire your students on as full-time employees after they have completed their work term(s)? Students that complete work terms at Canadian Natural gain a vast array of knowledge and also become familiar with Canadian Natural’s processes. Students who have completed work terms at our company are greatly valued and are strongly considered when we are looking to fill full-time positions.
Are there any eligibility requirements to apply for a student position? To be considered for a student opportunity, you must be legally eligible to work in Canada and be enrolled in a post-secondary institution.
When does Canadian Natural recruit for student positions? The two main recruitment periods begin in September and January. We recommend that you view our postings at our campus careers page and also check your school’s careers page.
Can I apply for a summer position even if Canadian Natural isn't recruiting at my university? Absolutely! Our postings can be found online at our campus careers page and are open for all students to apply. What documents do I have to submit to complete my online application for student positions? It is important to have your cover letter, resume, and transcripts as one complete PDF package. How should I prepare for an on-campus interview? Students are advised to arrive on time, and to be prepared to answer behavioural and experience-related questions. Above all, our most important suggestion when attending an interview is to be yourself!
What should I wear to the interview? Canadian Natural’s dress code is business casual. Appropriate office-attire is encouraged, while jeans are acceptable for Friday interviews.

Does Canadian Natural have an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Program? Yes, Canadian Natural has an EIT program that is designed to jump start your career. Our EIT programs are tailored to your skill sets, needs and interests. In addition you will have the opportunity to build upon your leadership skills and apply your academic knowledge to a practical work environment.

Our EIT program is designed to give you maximum exposure to different areas at Canadian Natural through rotational options and mentorship programs with senior engineers in both field and office settings. You’ll receive hands-on experience and take on new challenges that impact our bottom line.

Please note preference for our EIT program is given to prior co-op and internship students who did work terms with us while completing their schooling.
Are Masters Students eligible to apply for student positions that only specify an Undergraduate degree? Students who are in the process of completing their Master’s program are welcome to apply for any of our student positions as long as they are eligible to work in Canada and will be returning full-time to their program after the work term.
Does Canadian Natural have a scholarship program? Canadian Natural is proud of our training and education initiative, Building Futures. The Building Futures Scholarship Program accepts applicants from students in all stages of their academic lives that live in communities where Canadian Natural has operations with priority going to applicants seeking training in trades and technical areas related to the oil and gas industry. Are there any apprenticeship opportunities at Canadian Natural for students going into the trades? For trade’s positions, we live by our mission statement "to develop people" and most often promote from within. In the event we are recruiting apprentices in the trades, the positions will be posted under Maintenance on our experienced careers page.
During my work term, where will I stay and how will I get to my work location?

You can find position specific information under the "What we offer" section of each job posting. For work terms located in Calgary or in the field, students are responsible for finding their own accommodations. For days off, students are welcome to travel wherever they'd like, however, transportation assistance will not be provided.

If your work term is located at the Horizon Oil Sands site you will be provided with camp accommodations and flights to a HUB location (Calgary or Edmonton) for your days off.

Transportation assistance is provided for students from their school to their work location at the beginning and end of their work term.

Fraudulent Employment Offers from Third Party Groups

How do I know if I have received a fraudulent employment offer from a third party group and what should I do if I have received such an offer? It has come to our attention that in rare instances, candidates have received fraudulent employment offers via e-mail from unauthorized third parties posing as Canadian Natural. Please be aware that Canadian Natural is not in any way affiliated, connected, or represented by any third party groups and their fraudulent offers. Canadian Natural will never require any payment such as an application fee nor will we ever ask for credit card information from prospective candidates. In addition, Canadian Natural will never request personal information beyond what is required to ensure we have your proper name and mailing address. Candidates who do receive an employment offer from Canadian Natural will have participated in an extensive interview process directly with a Recruiter from the company.

If you receive a fraudulent employment offer from an organization posing as Canadian Natural, please disregard immediately. Do not provide any personal information including credit card or bank account details.
